Ayo Edebiri has been cast in a role on ABC’s hit comedy Abbott Elementary, where she’ll play Janine’s sister, Ayesha. Janine is played by series creator Quinta Brunson.
Variety confirmed the news of Edebiri’s casting.
In Abbott Elementary, Janine references her sister several times, hinting at a complicated relationship with her.
According to Variety, Ayesha will first appear on the upcoming Valentine’s day episode on Feb. 8 in a facetime call, which will plant the seed for a larger appearance later in the season.
Edebiri’s breakout role was in last year’s acclaimed FX/Hulu series The Bear.
For her role, she was nominated for a slew of awards, including the Gotham Awards, the Critics Choice Awards and more.
She is also an accomplished TV writer, with credits from the Netflix series Big Mouth to FX’s What We Do in The Shadows.
Edibiri will also appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie.
Abbott Elementary is executive produced by Brunson, Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker of Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions and Randall Einhorn.
Alongside Brunson, the show also stars Tyler James Williams, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walters, and Chris Perfetti.
