Abbott Elementary fights off becoming a charter school in Wednesday night’s episode.
In the exclusive clip below from the upcoming episode “Festival,” the staff of Abbott Elementary tries to stave off Draemond’s (guest star Leslie Odom, Jr.) latest attempt to make the school part of his Legendary Charter school system. After Janine (Quinta Brunson) breaks the news to the staff about the proposed annexing of Abbott as a new Legendary school, Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) makes a joke regarding Lee Daniels. Jacob (Chris Perfetti) is the only one out of the loop on the joke.

Abbott Elementary rallies together to fight the threat from Legendary Charter Schools. Ava pitches a festival to draw parents to school and collect their signatures for a petition. However, Draemond shows up with the intention of derailing the event.

The cast talked to Shadow and Act ahead of season 2 about what fans can expect. Brunson said she feels viewers who are part of the teaching profession can relate to the characters’ tug-of-war between their personal and professional lives.

“I think that teaching is such a huge job. And people used to always tell me they didn’t know where their teachers went after school was over. They just thought teachers stayed there. But I had a mother who was a teacher and I knew how much life happened to my mom outside of work,” she said. “I think that’s something that everyone can relate to. Our lives are happening. Something is happening in our lives that we just put to the side while we’re doing our jobs. I think that Janine is dealing with that hard thing where it’s like ‘I can’t put the thing to the side. I’m trying to so hard, but it’s affecting my work day.’ And it sucks.”

“Unfortunately, I think a lot of people will be able to relate to that,” she continued. “Having your personal life show up in work. We’ve seen it with Janine before, but we haven’t seen it in this version. She wants to start this year off on the right foot. She wants to seem as though she has it all together. She thinks she’s done a good job of it and has it all under control. But it all comes crashing down on her in a not fun way.”

Also guest starring with Odom this season is The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri, who plays Janine’s sister Ayesha. While Janine has mentioned her sister in season one, Edebiri first appeared as Ayesha in the Feb. 8 episode in a Facetime call with Janine.
