Everyone’s favorite school custodian is now a series regular on Abbott Elementary. William Stanford Davis has been promoted!
Though Davis, who plays cynical janitor Mr. Johnson, appeared throughout the premiere season of the ABC comedy, he was only in a recurring role.

Now with his role expanded, it makes sense to think we can expect to see a lot more of him, not to mention extended storylines.
Abbott Elementary has become ABC’s newest flagship comedy, earning several Emmy nominations. The series also made history with creator Quinta Brunson becoming the first Black woman to earn comedy nominations for writing, starring and for a series.
The nominations didn't stop there; Sheryl Lee Ralph and Janelle James both earned nominations for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Tyler James Williams also earned a nomination for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
Warner Bros. TV CEO Channing Dungey praised the series for its nominations, saying in a statement, “Great storytelling is great storytelling, regardless of the platform.”
Abbott Elementary, named after Brunson’s elementary school teacher, focuses on a Philadelphia-area elementary school and the teachers trying to give their students the best education available, despite continuous bureaucracy and a hilariously ineffective principal.
According to the description:
[A] group of dedicated, passionate teachers — and a slightly tone-deaf principal — are brought together in a Philadelphia public school where, despite the odds stacked against them, they are determined to help their students succeed in life. Though these incredible educators may be outnumbered and underfunded, they love what they do — even if they don’t love the school district’s less-than-stellar attitude toward educating children.
