On American Idol‘s Showstoppers Round where the top 24 contestants are selected, the judges seemed to be in a jokey mood. Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie (mainly Perry) pranked contestants on the latest episode. However, the biggest prank of the night involved platinum ticket holder Jay Copeland.

Copeland was able to skip round one of Hollywood week due to his Platinum Ticket, so naturally, it came as a great shock when the young singer was told that he didn’t make it into the Top 24.

Leading up this, the young crooner took to the stage first with a band laying it all on the table. Singing with all of his soul, Copeland performed “Jar of Hearts” by Christina Perri.

Copeland was not the only one shocked by the prank. Fans took to Twitter to discuss.

“Jay Copeland, you keep showing your diversity! Be as “broadway” as you please. Stop pigeonholing people Katy Perry! He’s more than just Soul. The American audience votes for more than just Soul,” a user wrote.

Another said, “[T]he judges need to stop f*king with these young singers emotions. They always cause certain singers extra stress @katyperry needs to stop it.”

Someone else wrote, "katy perry’s psychological warfare with the top 24 of american idol 20 is my favorite thing on the timeline today. Fritz and Jay we’re so sorry hunnies."

"You really messed with Jay," another said. 'I think he was truly shocked that he made it through after what you said. Sometimes I think all 3 of you go a teensy bit far. But I know it's all in good fun. I don't think I could do all that with a straight face."
