America’s Next Top Model, the popular reality TV show that aired from 2003 to 2018, is facing more and more criticism after social media users reminded people that the models on the show were told to darken their skin with makeup and act as different ethnicities.

According to BuzzFeed News, the controversial act happened not once but twice on the program, first in 2005 and then in 2009.

The 2005 clip, which has now resurfaced on TikTok, shows creative director Jay Manuel preparing he models for what’s about to happen at the “Got Milk” photoshoot.

“Now there’s a twist, we’re actually going to switch your ethnicities,” Manuel told the contestants. “The challenge here really is taking on the persona of that other ethnicity while in the photography and owning it.”

Manuel told the models they would be assigned to various ethnicities such as Indian and “eskimo.” They were also told to show their milk mustache in the pictures. Additionally, each model was told to pose with a 3-year-old child. The models were all smiles and giggles as they heard the ethnicities that would be assigned to them and what they would have to do.

“We’re making you into a traditional African woman, with a head wrap and everything,” the director said to one of the participants.

The same model, who described herself as half Black, said “being transformed into a proud African woman for me is definitely an exciting experience.”

In 2023, such ideas do not get a pass.

“Pls the black faces had my jaw on the floor,” one TikTok user wrote.

Some people are amazed by how much times have changed.

“The things they got away with on TV in the early 2000s,” one person said.

“This was a very unserious time,” another added.

Tyra Banks‘ modeling show continued to gain popularity around the world despite several questionable moments. One episode featured a model who posed in a grave shortly after her friend died. Banks and the other judges were also criticized for the way they treated the models.
