The family of Angie Stone is mourning the loss of their loved one after the iconic singer, who was a member of The Sequence trio, died in a car crash on Saturday. According to TMZ, the crash happened shortly after Stone left a performance in Montgomery, Alabama. Stone’s spokesperson, Deborah R. Champagne, told TMZ that she had talked to the singer on Friday night, but now the family is in shock.
In an Instagram post a week ago, Stone said she was planning to perform at the CIAA basketball tournament in Baltimore on Saturday. However, on Saturday morning, Stone’s daughter took to Facebook and left a heartbreaking message for fans.
“On the road mind racing keep me and my family in your prayers,” the grieving daughter wrote, Fox 5 DC reported.
According to TMZ, the tragic crash happened on Interstate 65 in Montgomery County as Stone was traveling in a van with her crew and backup performers. She was on her way to Baltimore after performing at the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association Grand Marshal’s Ball.
Stone made history with The Sequence, who signed with Sugar Hill Records and became the first all-female group to join the label. The trio released three albums between 1979 and 1985. One of their biggest hits, “Funk You Up,” has been sampled in Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” and Dr. Dre’s “Keep Their Heads Ringin’,” as well as several other tracks.
Stone launched her solo career in the late 1990s and dropped her debut album Black Diamond, which went gold. She later released one of her most popular songs, “Wish I Didn’t Miss You.” When she transitioned to acting, Stone appeared in The Hot Chick and Ride Along.
The beloved singer is survived by her son, Michael, her daughter, Diamond, and two grandchildren.
