Can you say "out of left field"…?

Antoine Fuqua is said to be teaming up with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and writer Will Beall ("Gangster Squad"), for a TV series adaptation of his 2001 feature film "Training Day," which won Denzel Washington an Oscar for Best Actor (his co-star Ethan Hawke was nominated for Best Supporting Actor but didn’t win). 

This news is according to Deadline, who says that the potential series is set up at Warner Bros TV, and is being shopped around to the broadcast networks – meaning, it won’t be a cable TV series, which is what I think we’d immediately assume, given that the movie was rated R. I hear all of the Big 4 are taking the pitch for the project.

It’s obviously too early for specifics, but the Deadline report does say that the potential series will likely be set in the present day, and, instead of being centered on a black crooked veteran cop and a white idealistic rookie, Fuqua may switch the races of the pair, and instead have the rookie played by a black actor, and the rogue veteran cop played by a white actor. I assumed it would follow the film’s basic structure, with 2 cops, the veteran, and the rookie, likely solving weekly crimes, as their methods collide… something like that.

Fuqua will executive produce and maybe direct the pilot, should the current package that’s being shopped around, gets picked up by one of the so-called Big 4 networks (my money is on Fox; it just feels like it’s more up their alley -a gritty crime noir).
