The "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin is reportedly gravely ill. Franklin's family shared the news with WDIV-TV on Monday, August 13. WDIV-TV anchor Evrod Cassimy wrote on Twitter:

According to the Detroit Free Press, Franklin's latest performance was November  2, 2017, at the Elton John AIDS Foundation in New York. Following that performance, she canceled two concerts scheduled in New Jersey in March — the same month she turned 76. Franklin's final public performance was at Philadelphia’s Mann Center in August 2017 although she performed in her hometown of Detroit in June 2017 where she again asked the crowd to "please keep me in your prayers."

While the specific illness Franklin is battling has not been publicized, the Daily Mail reports three of her siblings have fallen victim to deadly battles with cancer.

Franklin's contributions to music exceed that of legendary status. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, to a preacher father and singer and pianist mother, music was etched into the DNA of the 76-year-old. Franklin lived and grew up in Detroit with the influence of the Motor City funneling her music career. According to Heavy, she taught herself to play the piano by ear and was also a singer at her daddy’s church. She signed with Columbia in 1960.

Franklin has earned 30 Grammy awards and became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A biopic on the music icon is slated to premiere in 2019, starring Jennifer Hudson.
