People all over the country are currently on the lookout for Tijae Baker, a 23-year-old New Yorker who went missing during a trip to the nation’s capital.

The situation unfolded last month when the art student made a trip down to Washington, D.C., for a poster-making gig. She had learned of the job online and made her trip down on May 1, taking a bus headed for Union Station.

Tijae’s mother, Toquanna Baker, hasn’t had contact with her since then, despite the pair allegedly having a habit of communicating every single day.

“My baby is out there, and traumatized and scared,” Toquanna told CBS2. “For somebody to lure my daughter into another state. I have to deal with this, and this is going to affect my daughter’s life forever.”

“She just did a pop-up shop, an art pop-up shop. She’s very humble. She’s the sweetest person,” she added of her daughter.

A major development in the matter emerged on June 1. According to Roxanne Baker — Tijae’s grandmother — the 23-year-old Brooklyn native made a phone call from a Maryland nail salon, whispering for “her mother to come get her, now.”

By the time her concerned family members made their way to the business, Tijae was long-gone. Despite this, they managed to get surveillance footage that showed the art student pacing around the salon, allowing them to see Tijae with their own eyes.

Now, Tijae’s family is continuing their steadfast search, endeavoring to safely bring the 23-year-old back home. They also helped raise awareness on the situation through a rally held this past Monday.

“I’m going through abandoned buildings, walking through alleyways,” Toquanna recalled. “After this rally, I’m going back out there. I’m going to find my daughter.”

“I haven’t slept at all,” she added, saying that she’s afraid that Tijae is a victim of human trafficking. “It’s been over a month. I just want my child to return.”

The Brooklyn mother has also worked to capture the attention of city councilmembers, such as Darlene Mealy.

“We want someone to look at these cameras and get to the bottom of where she went,” Mealy noted.
