If you didn’t know, my black queen auntie Ava DuVernay is making history directing Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time. The story is a classic, the budget is larger than life and the creative vision for the project is in good hands. I’m already predicting a box office smash and a good time for the entire family. I didn’t think it could get any better, to be honest. But then it did.

Storm Reid has been cast a Meg Murry – the story’s protagonist.

If you aren’t familiar with the book, Meg’s father disappears mysteriously and she, along with some help, goes to find him on another planet. The world of sci-fi and fantasy are very often devoid of black girls and women, so this casting announcement in extra special. Storm already wowed us under Steve McQueen’s direction in Twelve Years a Slave, so it’s going to be amazing to see her and DuVernay link up for this movie. It will be even more satisfying for young black girls to have a live action sci-fi adventure that follows someone who looks like them.

This is a boss move on Disney’s part. The list of  lead actors and actresses of color in Disney films isn’t very long. But with this addition, and other films like Luptia’s Queen of Katwe,  it seems like the studio a really listening to fans. We’ll have to wait for more details on the film to make their way to the public. However, if this is any indication of the way things are going over at Disney, we can expect nothing but magic.
