Wednesday marked the one-year anniversary of the murder of 37-year-old Alton Sterling who was held down on the ground by two Baton Rouge police officers and shot several times at close range. The Department of Justice elected not to bring criminal charges against the officers for the shooting which was recorded by multiple bystanders. Yesterday, a small crowd of about 20 to 30 people gathered in front of the Triple S Food Mart where Sterling was killed to protest of that tragic event. The peaceful protest, which eventually migrated to police headquarters, ended in chaos as police fired stun guns, shot pepper spray, detained, and arrested seven people on misdemeanor counts.

According to The Advocate, police told the small group of protesters, led by the New Black Panther Party, not to cross barricade lines set up in front of the station. Protesters who stepped outside of the designated area were shot with stun guns and arrested.
