Beyoncé is set to perform at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 on Sunday, which will celebrate Nelson Mandela's 100th birthday. Before she sets stage, however, the star decided to pen a letter directly to the anti-apartheid icon, entitled, "Dear Madiba."

“You made it possible for so many people like me to reject impossibilities and understand our capabilities in making lasting change in the world," the Everything is Love singer wrote on her website, Beyonce.com. "The smallest efforts can change the trajectory for so many living in extreme poverty, facing injustices, the indecency of racism and fighting for their rights as humans,”

Beyoncé also talked about the first time she met the former South African president at the 46664 AIDS Benefit Concert in 2004 in Cape Town and taking a tour of Robben Island with him to the site where he spent 18 of his 27 years in prison.

According to Billboard, Global Citizen Festival will serve as a charity campaign set to help the poorest people in the world. The goal is to raise $1 billion and to donate at least 50 percent of proceeds to women and girls around the world.

“As we celebrate the Global Citizens Festival: Mandela 100, honoring your centennial year, I promise you that we have made your dreams our own," Bey concluded in her letter. "Your work and your sacrifices were not in vain. I will cherish every moment shared in your presence and use the lessons learned from you as fuel to stir positive ideas and solutions.”
