Black Lightning is a comic book icon. Much like Luke Cage, the character was born out of the blaxploitation era. But over time, we’ve been able to modernize the character through depiction in newer books and animation. He also has two of the flyest daughters in the superhero game.

What’s even more exciting about this is the creative team behind it all. Greg Berlanti, the mastermind behind shows like The Flash and Supergirl on the CW is joined by Salim & Mara Brock Akil, the duo that is responsible for bringing us some of our faves like The Game and Being Mary Jane. The only thing that this spells to me is TV magic. There’s a the classic superhero element involved from Berlanti who has developed more than on DC Comics series with success. The Akils, who are writing the show, have the cultural knowledge and understanding of the black experience to humanize the characters in the right way.

I’m beyond hype. Word is that in this series Jefferson Pierce aka Black Lightning has left the hero game. But due to some complications with his daughter and some local gang action, he has to hop back into the fray. In the comics, his daughters Anissa and Jennifer (Thunder & Lightning) have picked up the ball and kept on running. So it’ll be interesting to see if, or how, that plays out on screen.

This is a strong move by DC, especially in the wake of the Luke Cage shadow over the comic book TV series game. They certainly have all the right people involved to make this an amazing series. The show is still being pitched to networks now, but I have no doubt it will find a high profile home. But only time will tell.

And if you were already fan casting in your head, please stop. Orlando Jones is already ready.
