Generation Z is changing the way we shop for clothes. It is the leading generation when it comes to shopping secondhand, with 83% having previously shopped or are open to shopping for secondhand apparel, indicates a new study.

The popularity of thrifting and vintage shopping is expected to be an enduring trend, according to ThreadUp. Secondhand is on set to be a $90 billion market in the next 10 years. Concerns about sustainability, wanting to have a unique look and having access to designer items are the main motivators for Gen Z when thrifting.

The Black community is central to this trend. Reworked and upcycled items have been a part of the culture ever since Jim Crow laws, during which Black shoppers weren’t allowed access to many department stores and fashion spaces, says The New York Times.

Today, this has translated into the immense popularity of resale culture — in particular, streetwear fashion that has been championed by the Black community. Think Travis Scott’s Nike low dunks, Virgil Abloh’s designs for Off-White or even Telfar’s now iconic Shopping Bag.

Fashion is only one of the many art spaces in which the Black community has kept on setting the trends. After viral dances and beauty trends like “brownie glazed lips,” thrifting is yet another example.

On TikTok, the “Black-owned thrift store” tag has over 1 billion views – and with reason. There are a multitude of Black-owned thrift and vintage stores to choose from. Here are our best picks, no matter your personal style.
