Tri-Union Seafoods recalled two types of tuna cans due to a risk of botulism, a serious type of food poisoning, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. In February 2025, the product had initially been recalled, and it was accidentally shipped to stores across several states. Here’s what you need to know.

Products were distributed to Meijer stores throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, as well as to Giant Foods stores across Maryland and Virginia and to Safeway, Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions in California.
Why were the tuna cans recalled?
Tuna products under the brand names Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B and Trader Joe’s were originally recalled in February 2025 due a risk of botulism, according to the FDA and as also reported by Delish, which noted the “potentially fatal risk.” On Friday, Tri-Union Seafoods announced that a third-party distributor accidentally shipped out some of these products, which were quarantined.
The Feb. 2025 recall was announced by the company after it was found that the “easy open” pull tab on can lids had manufacturing defects, which may compromise the integrity of the product seal. Over time, the defect may cause the cans to leak or be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, a bacteria linked to botulism, according to Health.com.
What should you do if you’ve purchased a recalled tuna can?
Consumers are urged not to consume the product, even if it doesn’t look or smell spoiled. It is recommended consumers seek immediate medical attention if they start feeling unwell.
Tri-Union Seafoods also asked shoppers to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or to throw it away. Consumers may also ask the company for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product by contacting them by email at [email protected] or over the phone at 833-374-0171.
