As the festival comes to a close, wrapping up another year, the award winners will be announced throughout the weekend, starting with S&A favorite, Ben Zeitlin’s feature film debut, Beasts Of The Southern Wild, which continues its streak of accolades, picking up the FIPRESCI prize at the grandest stage in all of film-land, the Cannes Film Festival.

A coup for that magical realism drama, which also won the grand jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival (the grandest stage in all of film-land here in the USA).

FIPRESCI, the International Federation of Film Critics, annointed the film, which Fox Searchlight will open in the USA on June 27th; it also received an Ecumenical Jury mention.

The FIPRESCI selectes one outstanding film in competition, 1 in the Un Certain Regard sidebar (Beasts this year), and a third in either Directors' Fortnight or Critics' Week.

During last year's festival, another film covered quite a bit here on S&A, Aki Kaurismaki's Le Havre, was also a FIPRESCI winner.

Some of you will get to see the critically-acclaimed film before its June 27th release date, when it'll screen at the BAM Film Festival in Brooklyn, NY, and the Los Angeles Film Festival – both next month.

Tambay saw it at Sundance in January and reviewed it HERE.

There has also been talk of Fox Searchlight pushing the film as an Oscar contender later this year, with its pint-sized star, Quvenzhané Wallis as a potential best actress nominee.
