They don’t call Carlos King the “King of Reality TV” for nothing. The former Housewives producer has been killing it with shows from his own company, Kingdom Reign, and dominating ratings with shows like Love & Marriage: Huntsville and Belle Collective. He’s stepping further into the spotlight with his own nighttime talk show on the network and branching out with a spinoff of Huntsville in D.C. led by Monique Samuels, formerly of The Real Housewives of Potomac.
Shadow and Act Unscripted spoke with King about the new show and why working with Samuels is something he couldn’t pass up.
Carlos King says his nighttime show is unlike anything viewers have ever seen before
King knows how to produce a show and bring things to the forefront that are unexpected. He promises his new show is no different.
“My new late-night series is very different than any other late-night show that’s on television. And I can promise you that,” he insists. “Every party, we have a deejay, we’re standing on our feet for the first couple of minutes where my guests appear to join me on stage. We’re gossiping. We’ve got a popcorn machine…We do play games, and throw shade.”
He says once he was presented with the chance to spinoff the successful ‘Huntsville’ series, Monique Samuels was the first casting choice
King says he fell in love with Samuels at first sight watching her on Potomac. He was saddened when she left the series, and promised himself that if he ever had the chance to work with her, he’d jump on it. But he had to do some convincing as Samuels vowed she was done with reality TV due to having such a traumatic experience on Potomac.
“I’ve always been attracted to doing a show in D.C. and that dates back to years ago, But it wasn’t until I met with Monique and Chris after they left The Real Housewives of Potomac that I was like, ‘Oh, wait a second, you always wanted to do a show in D.C. and OWN is saying they wanted to franchise Love and Marriage. What did you do? DC starring Monique and Chris.’ And if it wasn’t for Monique and Chris saying yes, I’m not sure DC would have happened,” he gushes.
