Chance the Rapper is gracing the cover of Teen Vogue for their latest music issue, and he sat down with the mag to chat about his identity as a “Christian rapper,” serving as an inspiration for indie artists, racism in a social media age, his creative process and what it’s like to work with Kanye West.

Who conducted the interview?

Why, no other than Mr. Get Out himself, Jordan Peele! You may be wondering why him, but the answer is simple: they’re both horror film nerds, so the Teen Vogue team knew interview chemistry would be off the charts.

Given the gospel tunes and the genre’s notable inspiration throughout the hit Coloring Book, Chance talked about his fear of how that would influence people's perception of him.

“One of my biggest fears with Coloring Book was that it would be labeled. I hate labels. I never sought out for people to recognize it as a gospel album. I don’t make Christian rap, but I am a Christian rapper,” he said.

“When I was going out and trying to fully give glory to God, in my setting, I feared that people would be dismissive of it, like, ‘This is Christian rap, I’m not trying to hear it.’ But it’s the total opposite: People were very accepting of it. Whether they say, ‘I’m an atheist, but I love Coloring Book' or they say, 'I’m so glad I was able to get closer to God through this project.’”

The two even bonded regarding Get Out. You may remember that Chance bought out a theater in Chicago so that people in the community could see it for free.

Speaking to the man that made the film, Chance said he felt the movie was a very important in today’s society, “I think it’s very revolutionary in that it tells a story that’s never been told. It uses this discomfort and awkwardness to describe blackness in America and being black in these white spaces.”

The Coloring Book artist, who said he wanted to become “a beacon for independent artists and music makers with their own agenda,” also provided a bit of insight into working with Kanye West, who is universally known as being quite the enigma.

Given their bonds to Chicago, being in the room with West was very surreal for Chance. “25 percent of it is productive ideas flowing and then 75 percent is lectures from Kanye, where he tells you exactly how he views the world — just very straight Kanye honesty that definitely gets your creativity and strong opinions out on the floor. I think it helped me find myself,” Chance said.
