R&B singer Chrisette Michelle vowed to make a comeback following the fallout over her Trump inauguration performance.

In an interview with The Washington Post, the "Strong Black Woman" artist reflected on her choice to sing for President Donald Trump in an effort to unite the country.

“While I felt like people took so much away from me in those two years, I’m more grateful for finally having time to look at the last 12 years," Michele told the Post. "And I think that is the bright side. … I want people to know that it’s okay to expect more from me.”

The criticism came from fans and the Black community who were well aware of what a Trump administration would mean. Radio stations around the country stopped playing her music. Social media lashed out at her. And she lost a record deal amid the outrage. Eventually, the stress of it all took a toll on her.

On October 27, 2017, Michele revealed in a now-deleted Instagram post that she had a miscarriage and suffered a stint of depression. The tragedy came after she announced she was no longer with Capitol Records.

Last year, her comeback truly began. A quick glance at her Insta shows she is in a better place. She decided to post support for the Democrats during the midterms. Two posts with photos of her at the White House with the Obamas was a clear sign she was distancing herself from Trump.

“On November 6th, we get the opportunity to change the narrative and REBALANCE the scale," she wrote before the 2018 midterm elections. "Your voice matters, my voice matters.”

Michele admitted her choice was not the best decision for her career. She ultimately saw that her actions did not represent the people well.

“People didn’t feel hopeful from that moment," Michele said of the performance. "They didn’t feel represented in that moment. They felt misrepresented. They felt further misunderstood, and they felt the person they were depending on to speak on their behalf just betrayed them.”

With 2019, the 36-year-old singer has released new music and plan on performing shows to reintroduce herself to fans.
