Coi Leray and her father, rapper Benzino, have not always been on the same page. However, in a new interview with the Breakfast Club, Leray thanks Nicki Minaj for her newfound respect for him.

In her interview on Wednesday, the rapper talked about what happened after she confronted Benzino about revealing her song “Blick Blick” too early.

“I told him don’t say a word, I didn’t even send him the song, I would never send him the song. I was like ‘no, you’re not getting this.’ I didn’t even send it to my mom, but I told them.”

Leray would explain that she learned her father shared the news on Clubhouse. And she reached out to him and asked him why he would do that.

“I called my dad—I’m like, ‘Dad why would you do this to me?’ And he’s like, ‘I’m so sorry. I didn’t know,” Leray said. “I feel like they tried to trick me into it.'”

The rapper said that she didn’t know whether her father being humiliated or her losing Minaj’s verse hurt her more. But Leray explained that after her talk with Minaj over the phone, Leray felt better about the situation.

“I felt like Nicki, you know, where she comes from she takes fathers very serious,” Leray said. “When I got on the phone with her and broke it down to her and I apologized. And she was just like ‘Yo I get it. I understand. One thing is you have to respect your father. She’s actually one of the main reasons why I’m like Team Dad. But she made it very clear like regardless of what you’re going through, that’s your dad and that’s why we’re going to do this song.'”

During her interview, Leray said that her father is a great man, despite their differences. However, she revealed that they are still building their relationship.

“My dad is a great man, and I love him; regardless to our differences, he’s still my father, and I have to respect him, right? And Dads—you guys get a little too crazy and overexcited,” Coi said. “So me and my dad is still building our relationship, to be honest. And when I speak to my dad, I’m like ‘ I just want to tell you what’s going on so you can just feel proud of me.”

In February, Benzino publicly apologized to Leray for revealing the song ahead of time on Clubhouse.

Benzino took to his Twitter and apologized to Leray and Minaj, stating that he didn’t mean to offend anyone.

“I just wanna apologize to Coi, Nicki, everyone involved, I meant no harm nor did I mean to offend or disrespect anyone,” Benzino tweeted. “I know better, it’s a business of trust and I broke that. I feel horrible and sad. I am 100 percent in the wrong and it will never happen again.”

Leray went live on Instagram the same day that Benzino publicly apologized to her, telling her father that her time had come. Leray said she wanted him to be happy for her when it was time and not worry about her.

“It’s my turn, Daddy,’ Leray said. “I’mma need you to sit the f**k down, grab you some popcorn, enjoy the show, and clap for me when it’s time to clap for me,” Leray said. “Alright, Daddy? Don’t worry. I told him this before I hopped online.”

We are happy to hear that Coi and her father Benzino are working through their differences.
