It’s been 4 days filled with grief, trauma, numbness and a myriad of other emotions surrounding the acquittal of policeman Jeronimo Yanez in the fatal shooting of beloved St. Paul elementary school cafeteria supervisor Philando Castile during a traffic stop.

Today, the dash cam footage from the tragic police brutality incident has been released. As you may recall, Yanez fired seven deadly shots at Castile, who owned a permit to carry the firearm that he lawfully announced to the officer. 

Obviously, the footage shows the shooting and its aftermath. It is incredibly graphic.

We recently reported the “not guilty” verdict confirmed by Ramsey County jury members. Yanez was charged with manslaughter and dangerous discharge of a firearm and was acquitted by a jury of his peers. Despite the acquittal, the city of St. Anthony has confirmed that Yanez will no longer work for the police department.

Following the verdict decision, Castile’s family announced that they would be filing a civil suit against the St. Anthony police department.

The girlfriend of Castile, Diamond Reynolds — who was also present in the car during the time of the fatal shooting — will be looking over evidence in order to decide whether she will be pursuing a civil suit as well.

Let’s hope that this new footage serves as effective evidence to assist in the civil suit case. It’s a shame we have to ask for scraps such as this. Regardless, we hope the Castile family is successful in this next journey toward some sort of justice.
