Halle Bailey has been cast as Ariel in the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Little Mermaid, and although this is a joyous moment for many of us, it isn’t as wonderful for some.

Since the movie trailer was revealed, the amount of backlash aimed at Bailey, primarily due to her race, has been at an ultimate high. Fans and celebrities have come to the defense of the singer/actress, the latest supporter being her boyfriend, rapper DDG.

In a recent interview with The Bootleg Kev Podcast, DDG, whose real name is Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr, was questioned about how Halle, 22, was dealing with the negativity.

“She be laughing it off [but] they be going a little too hard,” the rapper revealed. “But I feel like the people is more attacking the character rather than her, personally.”

Unfortunately, based on the number of comments around the Disney princess being Black, it’s clear that it isn’t just Ariel they are attacking.  It’s the fact that a young Black girl is portraying such an iconic Disney character.

“Every once in a while we get reminded just how terribly racist America is,” Bootleg Kev told DDG.

“Yeah, I didn’t know people was this racist,” DDG said.  “I didn’t know this was a thing.”

The 24-year-old went on to say that he thought racism was cancelled thanks to Martin Luther King, Jr.

“I thought this sh** was gone already,” he said.  “I thought Martin Luther King [Jr.] canceled that sh** out! This sh** is crazy, I was like ‘what the f*** is these n**as talking about?”

DDG then firmly declared that the film is going #1 regardless, and even the haters will watch the film, regardless of their narrow-minded, racist mindsets.

Since his appearance on the podcast, DDG’s comments have gone viral, with many people judging the rapper for thinking racism was canceled. His education level has also come into play, with some social media users calling for Halle Bailey to dump him.

DDG has since taken to social media to remind everyone that he graduated valedictorian in 2015 and, therefore, is very smart.
