Donald J. Trump finally figured out what the Congressional Black Caucus is!

And we know this because the Washington Post reports that the president plans to meet with representatives from the group on Wednesday.

Now, you may remember our president, a man who has referred to himself as “the least racist person,” asked black reporter April Ryan five weeks ago if the Congressional Black Caucus “are friends of yours,” in response to a question about why he hadn’t met with them.

And, folks, this was seconds after he learned from Ryan what the Congressional Black Caucus is.

And — and — this was weeks after the Caucus first began lobbying for a meeting with the president. According to the organization, they first began requesting a meeting on January 19th.

Three months and one racist incident later, we finally have a meeting. Let’s hope Donald Trump doesn’t launch it with a joke about CPT.

The Caucus’ chairman, Louisiana Democrat Representative Cedric L. Richmond, said that the sit-down with the president, “will be a serious meeting, not a photo opportunity,” perhaps alluding to Trump’s meeting with HBCU presidents that, as we have learned, turned out to be heavier on pomp and meme-ready pictures than actual substance.

Richmond also said that the president’s meeting with the Caucus is of particular import given that “there is no one around him who can provide the perspective and expertise that the CBC can.” Ben Carson’s statements on slavery certainly support this view, we’d say.

Five other Caucus members — Representatives Karen Bass (D-IN), Gwen More (D-WI), Brenda Lawrence (D-MI), Anthony Brown (D-MD) and André Carson (D-IN) — are set to join Richmond in meeting with the president Wednesday. The Caucus hopes to discuss the criminal justice system, the cuts proposed in Trump’s budget, the repeal of Obamacare and state of the nation’s public schools.

Of the meeting’s overarching goals, Richmond said, “I hope the president leaves the meeting with a better understanding of the challenges African Americans face, and how racism and discrimination in this country helped to create those challenges.”

Maybe with a little help from the Caucus, Trump can make some positive progress towards actually becoming the least racist person. He does already have two black friends, so, you know — maybe.
