Dope directed by Rick Famuyiwa, will almost certainly become a black cult classic, much like another one of his previous films, Brown Sugar.

Warner Bros. has decided to give him a shot at the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), announcing Famuyiwa as the man behind the lens for their silver screen installment of The Flash. Although the script is based on a composite of visions that previous writer and directors had for the project, after exiting due to differences of creative opinion, DC and WB decided that the Dope director would be the best choice to get the job done.

Dope captured the essence of what it means to be a young black person that identifies themselves as a member of a niche subculture. It was light, yet jam packed with social commentary about neighborhood culture, the concepts of code switching and many other nuances that exist within our communities. Let’s hope that this careful eye for environment will transfer over the DC Comics universe as Famuyiwa builds the world around Ezra Miller as The Flash. Hopefully it allows the characters to really come to life inside very familiar and native surroundings that will connect with the fans.

The Flash is slated to hit theaters on March 16th, 2018.
