Young rapper Smoke Dawg was shot dead outside of a Toronto nightclub Saturday, June 30.

Smoke Dawg, whose real name was Jahvante Smart, grew up in the Regent Park neighborhood in Toronto and overcame poverty to live his dreams.

"Jahvante touched the lives of many fans not only in Toronto but around the world. Music was able to let him travel the world and chase his dream of becoming a superstar," the rapper's representative told media.

According to the International Business Times, the shooting occurred in downtown Toronto, outside the Cube nightclub. People packed the club due to the number of Canada Day celebrations centered on Canada's nationhood.

Shots rang out in broad daylight reports US Weekly, and two victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Smoke Dawg was one of three people–two men and a woman–shot just before 8 p.m. The female victim is currently in a local hospital being treated for injuries that are not life-threatening.

In 2017, Smoke Dawg opened for the 6 God during the European leg of Drake's Boy Meets World Tour. Drake took to Instagram to pay tribute to the fellow rapper trying to make a name for himself:

“So much talent and so many stories we never get to see play out. Rest up Smoke.”

Authorities have not named suspects responsible for the shooting. However, US Weekly reports “suspects may have fled in black SUV or white car.”

Smart is one of several other rappers who recently died due to gun violence, most notable of which was that of musician XXXTentacion
