In an exclusive from Variety, it has been revealed that FX is in the early stages of development on a series based on Freshwater, the bestselling debut novel Akwaeke Emezi.

Freshwater tells the haunting story of Ada, an Igbo and Tamil woman from Nigeria in her final year of college who learns she has three spirits living in her subconscious. Ada soon finds her life and her sanity at stake when her alternate selves attempt to take control of her. Critically acclaimed, Freshwater, was listed as a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award for a Debut Novel and a finalist for the NYPL Young Lions Award.

The script for the series adaptation of Freshwater will be written by none other than Emezi herself. Emezi will also executive produce alongside Tamara P. Carter, a screenwriter and director who has written for shows such as The Fosters and The Leftovers.

The project will also be produced by Kevin Wandell and Lindsey Donahue under FX Productions.

Emezi’s elation was evident in her Twitter post yesterday (May 22) when Variety broke the news. Check out Emezi’s tweet below.
