Grey’s Anatomy fans are about to face a new shakeup among the cast.

Multiple trade publications report that Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd will leave the popular ABC series after the season 22 finale, airing May 7.

The two play Teddy (Raver) and Owen (McKidd), two Army vets who found love at the hospital and raised a family before ending their relationship in divorce. Both actors joined the series around the same time — McKidd in 2008 and Raver in 2009 — which makes their exits even more poignant. According to The Hollywood Reporter,, McKidd has also become part of Grey’s Anatomy’s directing pool, directing 48 episodes since season 7.

Shonda Rhimes reacts to the departures

Series creator Shonda Rhimes released a statement to Variety about the departures, saying in part that fans have had “the privilege” of watching the characters’ love story over the years. She wrote, “It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves.”

Rhimes also described the actors’ “extraordinary talent, nuance and heart” in their roles and said they have added much to the series “both in front of and behind the camera.”

“I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them and to see them both shine,” she wrote.

What the actors said about leaving the show

McKidd and Raver also gave statements to Variety regarding their departures, with McKidd calling the series “a huge chapter of my life, creatively and personally.”

“I’ve had the privilege of working with an extraordinary group of people throughout that time,” he said of his tenure on the show. “…I’m particularly thankful to Shonda Rhimes for creating Owen, and for the encouragement she gave me as I stepped into directing.”

Raver wrote that playing her role has been an “incredible privilege,” also describing it as “a true gift to bring the iconic words of Shonda and our brilliant team of writers to life.”

Raver also thanked current showrunner Meg Marinis, as well as previous showrunners like Krista Vernoff and directors like Debbie Allen, who encouraged her to start directing.

“To my amazingly talented castmates and our formidable, tireless crew: playing in this arena with you has been a joy, and I will carry this company in my heart always,” she wrote. “To the fans — your unwavering devotion and support are the reason this show remains such a force. Thank you for making this set my place of magic and my home.”
