Shadow and Act and our sister site, Travel Noire, have the exclusive trailer premiere for Netflix‘s upcoming series, High on the Hog: How African-American Cuisine Transformed America. The series is an adaptation of food historian Jessica B. Harris’ book of the same name and is said to be “part culinary show, part travelogue.” The docuseries will have four episodes and each episode is an hour long.
According to Netflix’s official description of the series, it “takes viewers on a culinary journey that ventures from Africa to the deep south” and follows food writer Stephen Satterfield, who meets with “the chefs, historians, and activists who are keeping centuries-old traditions alive.”
Roger Ross Williams directed the first two episodes while Jonathan Clasberry co-directed episode 3 and Yoruba Richen directed episode 4.
“Over Western African stews, soul food, barbecue, and fine dining, the series, reveals an expansive, eclectic culinary history shaped by slavery, the Civil War, Juneteenth, and present day,” the description of the series continues. “It’s a story of Black America’s resilience, enduring creativity, and vital contribution to America’s kitchen.”
The series is produced by Shoshana Guy and executive produced by Roger Ross Williams, Geoff Martz, Craig Piligian, Sarba Das, Fabienne Toback and Karis Jagger.
