Art imitates life in this final chapter of The Boys.

The Prime Video series returned for its fifth and final season with a two-episode release on Wednesday. followed by new, weekly episodes every Wednesday until the series finale on May 20.

Season 5 starts with Homelander officially in control of America

Immediately following a chaotic Season 4 finale, The Boys‘ farewell season follows the team mounting a desperate, bloody resistance against Homelander’s tyrannical rule.

At the start of Season 5, the Boys are fragmented, with Annie (Starlight) and others forming an underground resistance against Vought.

Across eight episodes, audiences will witness the ultimate showdown between the Boys and Homelander to halt the destruction of society. Quite frankly, the show mirrors a lot of what many Americans are up against today.

Showrunner Eric Kripke told Blavity’s Shadow and Act that, “weirdly,” he aims to have people take away home from the show’s final act.

“One of the best things about humanity, [is] just our ability to always get back up no matter how many times we’re punched in the face,” he said. “To me, that’s what hope in this show is. It doesn’t come from leaders. It doesn’t come from big, grand statements or sweeping gestures. Your leaders are not here to save you. So we all have to take care of each other and be kind to each other and save ourselves.”

Black Noir poses a very specific question in this final act

Nathan Mitchell (Black Noir/Earving) said that going into Season 5 of The Boys, his character has a newfound commitment to the character within himself that he’s finally discovered.

“It’s a question of, ‘How deep, how much do you follow your own desires? How much do you follow your own path? How much do you commit to what you’ve been tasked with?” he said. “When it comes to Noir, there are themes of mentorship, themes of looking for direction and taking the wrong lesson, and, you know, choosing violence, choosing vengeance. That was one of the reasons that the first Noir ended up with such a traumatic injury. So the theses of vengeance, of ambition, but ultimately, it’s a very tragic story.”

Actors credit the writers for grounding the characters, as fans bid them farewell

While Vought has always felt extreme, in today’s world, it hasn’t always felt unrealistic.

When asked how they ground the corporate and power dynamics in something that mirrors what audiences are seeing in the real world today, actors Susan Heyward (Sister Sage) and Colby Minifie (Ashley Barrett) said they give full credit to the show’s writers.

“A lot of the grounding is done by the writers. A lot of the grounding is in the script,” Minifie told us. “They must spend hours and hours and hours of consuming media — both social media, different news sources, pop culture — they consume so much, and then they’re able to crystallize it and twist it using fantasy and fiction.”

Heyward added, “They’re very honest in their questions. They sit, and they ask, ‘What would it be like if we had a narcissist in power?’ And then they answer that question as honestly as they possibly can. And their honesty is really what makes us as honest as possible in our performances. We’re always getting the note, ever since we started the show, the note has always been grounded. These are humans, real people. Make it as real as humanly possible, and that has been our guiding star. I think in all of this, humans are flawed.”
