Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams are taking a financial stand against Georgia’s new abortion law.
Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and Abrams’ Bad Robot are getting ready to film upcoming HBO series Lovecraft Country in Georgia. However, to challenge the law, the studios are donating the money from Lovecraft Country to the ACLU of Georgia and Fair Fight Georgia to fight for women’s reproductive rights.
The two studio heads gave a lengthy statement explaining their position.
“In a few weeks, we start shooting our new show, Lovecraft Country and will do so standing shoulder to shoulder with the women of Georgia. Governor Kemp’s ‘Fetal Heartbeat’ Abortion Law is an unconstitutional effort to further restrict women and their health providers from making private medical decisions on their terms,” they said in a statement.
“Make no mistake, this is an attack aimed squarely and purposely at women. We stand with Stacey Abrams and the hardworking people in Georgia, and will donate 100% of our respective episodic fees for this season to two organizations leading the charge against this draconian law: the ACLU of Georgia and Fair Fight Georgia,” they continued. “We encourage those who are able to funnel any and all resources to these organizations.”
This is the latest move Hollywood has done to fight against Georgia’s divisive law, which will more than likely be challenged in the courts ahead of Jan 1, 2020, the date the law is supposed to go into effect. So far, companies including Killer Films, Blown Deadline Productions, Duplass Brothers Productions, CounterNarrative Films and Color Force Productions have taken their business out of Georgia as a boycott until the law is blocked or somehow repealed.
