Season 2’s cast for HBO’s Task is starting to take shape, with Mahershala Ali being tapped for a major role opposite returning series lead Mark Ruffalo.
Right now, Ruffalo is the only confirmed returning cast member after several deaths in Season 1. While Task was never confirmed to be a limited series, it got a renewal for Season 2, opening up new possibilities.
Who will Mahershala Ali play in ‘Task’?
Per Variety, the logline for Season 2 is as follows: “Tom Brandis (Ruffalo) takes the helm of a new task force, but the deeper the operation runs, the harder it is to tell who’s the target.”
Ali is set to play Eddie Barners, “a seasoned and well-respected DEA agent in Philadelphia whose team comes into conflict with Tom’s unit.”
Task brings Ali back to HBO, where he was the lead for Season 3 of True Detective.

Season 1 of Task starred Ruffalo, Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox and Martha Plimpton.
Its logline was: “Set in the working class suburbs of Philadelphia, an FBI agent (Ruffalo) heads a Task Force to put an end to a string of violent robberies led by an unsuspecting family man (Pelphrey).”
Brad Ingelsby is the creator and showrunner. He executive produced with directors/executive producers Jeremiah Zagar and Salli Richardson-Whitfield. Other executive producers for Season 1 were Ruffalo, Mark Roybal and Paul Lee for wiip, David Crockett, and Ron Schmidt.
