Fans of the NBC show This Is Us were acquainted with actress Melanie Liburd in the second season finale. For those unfamiliar, Liburd portrayed the role of Zoe, a recurring character who was the girlfriend of Kevin, played by Justin Hartley. Word has come from The Hollywood Reporter that Liburd will return for the show’s third season as a series regular.
Given that Zoe was a recurring character introduced in the second season finale, she remains a character enshrouded in mystery, aside from the fact that she is also the cousin of Beth Pearson (Susan Kelechi Watson).
In the second season finale of the show, fans were left with an image of Randall Pearson (Sterling K. Brown) telling an older version of Tess (Iantha Richardson), “It’s time to go see her,” to which Tess replies, “I’m not ready.” While many fans speculated this signaled the demise of fan favorite Beth Pearson, this theory was eventually debunked.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Isaac Berger revealed that the dynamic between Zoe and Kevin will be explored further. “When we come back, we’re going to be embarking on a new chapter with them sort of discovering their romance, and their relationship, and figuring out what they are,” he said.
No stranger to emotionally wrought material, Liburd has had roles in shows such as CSI, Game of Thrones and Dark Matter. Liburd won’t be the only new face joining the show’s third season. Rob Morgan, who caught our attention in Dee Rees’ soul-stirring Southern epic Mudbound, is in a mystery role tied to a planned political storyline. The third season of This Is Us will premiere on NBC on September 25.
