Michaela Coel has set up her next project.
The multihyphenate, who soon has A24’s Mother Mary and HBO/BBC’s First Day On Earth (also produced by A24) coming soon, will be back at A24, where she’s set ot write and direct a remake of Bloodsport.
It is described as a “reimagining” of the 1988 Jean-Claude Van Damme film.
Here’s what Michaela Coel says about the project
In a statement, Coel said, “I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them. I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET’S FUCKING GO.”
As Variety reported, the OG film, directed by Newt Arnold, “centered on a U.S. army captain and ninjutsu practitioner who competes in an underground full-contact martial arts tournament in Hong Kong.” No plot details are known as of yet for Coel’s film, so there’s no word on how close it will follow the original.
Marc Toberoff and Alberto Lensi are producing the pic, with Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle executive producing. A24 is financing and distributing it.
