After a quite active awards season, the 2026 Academy Award nominations were announced on Thursday morning by Lewis Pullman and Danielle Brooks. Sinners got 16 nominations, breaking the record for the most Oscar noms ever.
Most nominations were on par with what many predictions were, but there was a big welcome surprise as Delroy Lindo was nominated for Best Supporting Actor after not showing up in many precursor awards. His co-star, Miles Caton, even showed up at the category for SAG’s Actor Awards. Ultimately, however, Lindo seemed to edge out Paul Mescal for Hamnet, who many projected in the category.
Sinners’ Wunmi Mosaku was a sure bet for the Supporting Actress category as she seemed to continue to gain steam in all of the precursors, and joins Golden Globe winner Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another) in the category.
Also expected, Michael B. Jordan was nominated in the Lead Actor category in his very first Oscar nomination. Chase Infiniti, nominated for many precursors for One Battle After Another, was likely edged out in the Lead Actress category by Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue.
Sinners got a Best Picture nomination, alongside Ryan Coogler’s nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Coogler is the seventh Black director to be nominated for Best Director. No Black director has won. He’s also only the third Black director, along with Jordan Peele and Spike Lee, to get nominated for director, original screenplay and picture. He’s just the second to do it in the same year, with Peele being the first.
In other highlights, Mia Neal was nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for The Smashing Machine, Ruth E. Carter was nominated for Best Costume Design for Sinners, Hannah Beachler was nominated for Best Production Design for Sinners, and Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig Göransson were nominated for Best Original Song for Sinners.
