Ruth Negga will finally make a film in the era she seemed to be created for–the 1920s–when she becomes Josephine Baker in an upcoming limited series.
According to Deadline, Negga will portray the legendary singer, dancer, World War II spy and activist in Josephine, a limited series by ABC Signature Studios with LeBron James’ Springhill Company. Director Millicent Shelton and David Makes Man showrunner Dee Harris-Lawrence are behind the project, with Harris-Lawrence writing the script and Shelton directing. Negga will executive produce along with Harris-Lawrence and The Springhill Company.
As Deadline reports, Josephine is set to be “a raw and unflinching look at the force of nature that was Josephine Baker, the biggest Black female artist of her time.” The miniseries will delve into her storied and multi-faceted career as well as the “sexual fluidity, struggles, and bold life of an icon.”
Negga can be seen in Sundance darling Passing, which has recently been acquired by Netflix.
This is the second project on Baker in the works, as Paula Patton is working on a film that she is set to star in.
