Some sad news, Saturdays fans–the show has apparently been canceled by Disney Channel.
TVLine has the scoop on the series after answering a question from a fan who had been reading social media tea leaves.
According to TVLine’s Matt Webb Mitovich, he could confirm that the series will not come back for a second season. He went on to say: “Sources tell me that Disney Branded Television, though high on the single-camera comedy, is now focusing on building out its multicam strategy, Disney-owned IP, and global tentpole programming.”
As the fan said, Saturdays meant a lot to her as a Black woman, and a lot of ans probably feel the same way. As Black Disney Channel fans, Saturdays felt like a return to a 2000s-era Disney Channel, especially with Raven’s Home, the continuation of That’s So Raven, doing so well on the channel.
The stars of the show also felt positively about their characters and story when speaking to Shadow and Act in March. Johns said, “It’s important to see sisterhood so young Black girls have a chance to understand, ‘Hey, we’re here for each other.’ This is how we love each other. We express our love, [and] how we communicate with one another, and it helps you to see Black love and Black friendship as well.”
The series was also executive produced by Marsai Martin, black-ish star and Hollywood’s youngest producer. She also said in the interview how the series reflected her experiences with a supportive family that guided her along in life.
“I come from a very supportive family, supportive parents as well, which their style of parenting has always been helping to guide you, but not be you,” she said. “But more of learning from your mistakes and only here to guide you if you need anything, but at the same time joking around and not hovering over their children and I think that’s really what we wanted to show here– something that felt very natural, especially in a Black family household, but everyone can relate to it in some way.”
