Though the two-part Wicked film series wrapped in November, fans won’t have to wait long to see Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey work together again.
The pair tip-toed around confirming that they’re collaborating on a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, and then the news was officially confirmed.
Blavity’s Shadow and Act confirmed that performances for the West End production will begin at the Barbican Centre, London in Summer 2027. The production will be directed by Marianne Elliot, with design by Tom Scutt, from music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapin.
On Wednesday, the co-stars shared a mysterious photo on Instagram of them sitting in front of Georges Seurat’s famous painting, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” which inspired the show Sunday in the Park with George.
“All it has to be is good,” Bailey captioned the post, referring to lyrics from the musical’s titular (and most beloved) song.
In December, several outlets, including Deadline, reported that Grande and Bailey were in talks to star in a revival of Sunday in the Park with George. The 1984 Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical is split into two acts. The first follows a fictionalized version of Seurat amid the painting of his masterpiece with the help of his muse, Dot, and the second tells the story of Seurat’s great-grandson, George, a contemporary artist who enlists the help of his grandmother, Marie, to help him present his latest work.
The musical’s most recent major revival starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford on Broadway in 2017.
Fans are certainly eager for Grande and Bailey to take on Sunday in the Park with George.
