Fans of The Blackening can expect another installment in the near future.

Variety reports that a sequel to the surprise horror/comedy The Blackening is in the works from co-writers Dewayne Perkins and Tracy Oliver and producer E. Brian Dobbins. The film’s positive word of mouth helped propel the film to make over $18 million, more than double of the film’s reported “microbudget” of $5 million. MRC and Lionsgate, who produced and distributed the first film, will be back to do the same for the sequel.

The Blackening sequel currently doesn’t a plot description, but in a previous interview with Variety, Perkins said that he sees his franchise being more like a Scary Movie” style franchise instead of an anthology with a new cast each time.

“Same group, sprinkle in some new people,” he said at the time, adding, “I feel like we’ve got something good, and I love the dynamic, but fresh blood always turns things up a little bit.”

The Blackening stars Perkins, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, Grace Byers, Melvin Gregg, Jermaine Fowler and X Mayo as a group of friends who decide to have a small get-together in a cabin AirBnB. But things turn sinister when their friends who are renting the cabin (played by Yvonne Orji and Jay Pharoah), are missing and a weird game shows up to test their blackness, with death being the result of losing.
