Netflix has released first-look images of its newest sci-fi action series, The Boroughs, executive-produced by Stranger Things creators, the Duffer Brothers.
The series stars Alfred Molina as a new member of a retirement community. His character is grieving his wife, but as Netflix describes, his “monstrous encounter inspires him to join a misfit crew of unlikely heroes who uncover a dark secret that proves their ‘golden years’ are more dangerous, and they are more formidable, than anyone expects.”
Who else stars in ‘The Boroughs’?
The series, which was first announced in 2024, also stars Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Geena Davis, Denis O’Hare, Bill Pullman, Carlos Miranda, Jena Malone, Seth Numrich and Alice Kremelberg. Additional cast includes Ed Begley Jr., Dee Wallace, Eric Edelstein, Rafael Casal, Mousa Hussein Kraish, Beth Bailey, Karan Soni and Jane Kaczmarek.
Creators, showrunners and executive producers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews told Netflix’s Tudum how the series stemmed from their childhoods.
“When Jeff was a child, all he did was draw monsters. And when Will was a child, he started planning for his retirement,” they said. “So a show about a group of retirees who fight monsters really plays to both our strengths. The result is an adventure about a group of unlikely heroes that we can’t wait for everyone to fall in love with.”
They described the series as “equal parts scary, mysterious, exciting and emotional,” adding that working with the Duffer Brothers to achieve that balance “was so fun.”
“…Everyone talks about wanting to make a show that teenagers can watch with their parents,” they said. “We wanted to make one that teenagers could watch with their parents and their grandparents, that everyone could enjoy.”
When does ‘The Boroughs’ premiere?
The Boroughs comes to Netflix on May 21. Check out the first-look photos below:
