Amazon MGM Studios has released the first trailer for the upcoming sports biopic, Unstoppable, starring Jharrel Jerome and Jennifer Lopez.
Don Cheadle, Bobby Cannavale and Michael Peña also star in the pic, which first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September.
Per the logline, the film is “an inspiring, true story about Anthony Robles (played by Jerome) who defied every expectation to become a national wrestling champion.”
It is the directorial debut of Oscar winning editor William Goldenberg. He won for Argo and was previously nominated for The Imitation Game, Zero Dark Thirty, Seabiscuit and The Insider. Robles himself, who is a producer on the project, also appears in the film, credited as ‘Anthony Robles Double,’ performing the complex wrestling moves and stunts. Jerome trained with Robles and worked closely with him as well.
What is ‘Unstoppable’ about?
Here’s the official description of the film:
Unstoppable is the inspiring true story of Anthony Robles (Jharrel Jerome) who was born with one leg but whose indomitable spirit and unbreakable resolve empowered him to defy the odds and pursue his dreams. With the unwavering love and support of his devoted mother Judy (Jennifer Lopez) and the encouragement of his coaches, Anthony fights through adversity to earn a spot on the Arizona State Wrestling team. But it will demand everything he has, physically and mentally, to achieve his ultimate quest to become an NCAA Champion.
“I’m very excited to bring it to the wider audience for sure, because his story is so unique beyond wrestling,” Jerome told Blavity’s Shadow and Act shortly after the film’s TIFF premiere. It’s not just about what he does on the mat, it’s the strength he has off the mat. He’s wrestling the whole movie. Every scene’s a wrestling scene, whether it’s wrestling an opponent, or wrestling his own emotions, or wrestling things going on around him. The way he’s so in control of his body [and] the way he’s so in control of his emotions, it’s a story that you can sit back and be like, ‘Hey, that’s me. I could see a little bit of me in that.’ Regardless if you have both your legs, it’s not about that. It’s also not about him just having one leg.”
Goldenberg directed from a screenplay Eric Champnella and Alex Harris & John Hindman. The script is based upon the book by Anthony Robles and Austin Murphy.
The film is produced by Artists Equity, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s production company. Affleck, Robles, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Andrew Fraser, Gary Lewis, David Crockett are producers on the film. The film also employed Accessibility Coordinators from IndieVisible to “ensure a safe working environment, including productivity tools for all cast and crew.”
When does ‘Unstoppable’ premiere?
The film hits select theaters on Dec. 6 before streaming on Prime Video on Jan. 16, 2025.
