Everything is coming up pink and green, especially for fans of Wicked who also happened to be Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. members.
The sorority, Comcast NBCUniversal and Xfinity hosted an exclusive screening series for the pop culture sensation and box office hit.
AKA members in major U.S. cities receive unique opportunity
According to a news release, the companies and organization partnered to offer AKA members in major U.S. cities—including Los Angeles, Seattle, the Bay Area, Washington, D.C., New York City, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami and Philadelphia— the chance to see the highly-anticipated film.
Additionally, Xfinity awarded laptops to undergraduate AKA members in each city as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to digital equity.
The unique series called “Sisterhood, Service and the Power of Connection” includes an advance screening of the film and an exclusive onscreen interview with Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, an Honorary AKA member, and Today show host Sheinelle Jones, a fourth-generation AKA member.
Erivo’s experience being an honorary AKA member
The fireside chat, released Wednesday, features Erivo and Jones discussing topics such as defying gravity, sisterhood, and the experience of being a member of one of the largest Black Greek-letter sororities.
“I feel very moved to have been asked to be an Honorary AKA and I am very proud of it,” Erivo said during the interview. “I think that one thing I want people to take away from this is that sistership is important. Finding our friendship, love and community between us is a really important thing that helps us thrive. Sisterhood is vital—necessary and vital.”
From stage to the screen
Erivo and co-star Ariana Grande have been on a significant press run promoting the musical film. In an exclusive interview with Blavity’s Shadow and Act, the award-winning singer and actor shared how Wicked marked a pivotal transition from stage to screen for her.
“It [is] really, really special for it to be this music [and] this musical…to be able to use my voice in ways that I haven’t been able to before,” she said in the outlet’s interview with the cast. “I feel really privileged to be able to sing this music and I’m glad I get to share with people.”
