Expectations are even higher for the upcoming new season 3 of FX’s series American Horror Story (which will be titled American Horror Story: Coven) thanks in part to the additions of Angela Bassett and  Gabourey Sidibe to the cast.

Also veteran stage star Patti LuPone has hopped along for the ride from series creator Shawn Ryan.

The actresses join a cast that already includes Jessica LangeEvan Peters, Sarah PaulsonTaissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy and Lily Rabe.

Although I never quite got into the series (not because I didn’t like it. There’s just so much else competing for my attention), with the addition of Sidibe and Bassett, I’m playing catch up before the new season arrives on October 9 at 10 PM ET/PT on FX.

The new season’s breakdown if you missed it previously:

It’s been over 300 years since the Salem witch trials. Those who remain are almost extinct and in danger again. A school has opened in New Orleans to teach protection to the young. The long-absent Supreme arrives to also protect the new students and their secrets. The themes include witches, witch hunts, incest, minorities, slavery, mothers and daughters, and witchcraft versus voodoo. This season will be set in modern day and the 1830s.

The last time Bassett appeared as a series regular on any TV show was during the final season (2008–2009) of the once hit medical drama ER on NBC

Sidibe was most recently a regular on Showtime’s The Big C.

Ahead of the broadcast premiere of Coven, FX has been releasing short teasers, each one somewhat cryptic, unveiling bits and pieces of the new season. This is probably the least cryptic of those I’ve seen thus far. Titled Initiation, you’ll catch a glimpse of Sidibe and Bassett, but just don’t blink.
