Well, it’s just a photo which BBC America posted to Twitter a few moments ago. No trailer yet, although I’m sure one is coming very soon. The new season is set to premiere this fall after all.
An American "Luther" could make it to your TV screens in the next year or so, if Fox can find an actor for the lead role (read all about that here).
But fans shouldn’t fret, because Elba is returning for another season (a 4th) of the original UK series, which will eventually air in the USA on BBC AMERICA, as it’s done in the past, this fall.
This time however, the season will comprise of just a 2-part special.
Show creator Cross said 6 months ago, before filmming began: "Ever since we said goodbye to John Luther on Southwark Bridge, there’s hardly been a minute when I didn’t wonder what happened next. So I decided to find out. We’re putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work."
The 2-part event special will pick up the story from the thrilling conclusion to the last (third) season. It showed Luther and the narcissistic killer and obsessive Alice (Ruth Wilson), strolling across Southwark Bridge together, after another action-packed adventure which saw the death of Luther’s partner and best friend, Justin Ripley (Warren Brown).
Via press release: Luther’s back. Pitted against his most chilling adversary yet, haunted by the ghosts of his past and hell-bent on retribution, he’s drawn into a terrifyingly complex case that pushes him closer to the edge than he’s ever been. Written and created by Emmy(R)-nominated Neil Cross and directed by Sam Miller (No Good Deed, Fortitude) the Luther special will also star Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey), Laura Haddock (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Inbetweeners Movie), Darren Boyd (Fortitude, Spy), John Heffernan (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Ripper Street) and Patrick Malahide (Indian Summers, The Paradise), with Michael Smiley and Dermot Crowley returning as Benny Silver and DSU Martin Schenk respectively. Elizabeth Kilgarriff said: ‘It’s very exciting to have Idris Elba back as DCI John Luther and to be in East London shooting the show’s fourth installment. Neil Cross has pulled out all the stops to make this the biggest, scariest story yet and it’s a privilege to welcome such a glittering array of acting talent to our already stellar cast.’"

Now the last leg of this journey begins. I’m looking forward to seeing some footage finally.
Elba and show creator, Cross have both been adamant about their plans to bring "Luther" to the big screen. I can only assume that this TV push on both sides of the pond in 2015/2016, may be a lead-in into the feature, which might be a 2016/2017 endeavor. Or, it could very well be that this 2-part special, each episode an hour long, for a total of 2 hours, could be the feature film that was previously announced, which would suggest that there might not be a big screen version of "Luther" any time soon, if at all.
