The sports world suffered two great losses off the field this weekend. The MLB lost 24-year-old Jose Fernandez. The Marlins pitcher and soon-to-be father was killed in a boat crash this past weekend. The sports world soon discovered that another player died tragically this weekend. 23-year-old former Michigan State defensive back and CFL player Mylan Hicks was killed on Sunday.

Police were called to investigate a shooting outside a Calgary nightclub on Sunday. According to the Calgary Sun, an altercation had broken out inside of the club. The altercation continued outside of the club, where shots were fired. Hicks suffered gunshot wounds and was transported to the hospital in life-threatening condition. He died shortly after from his injuries.

The violent and tragic death of Hicks has left a lot of his former teammates and coaches speechless. Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio is one of them. “No. 6 was a beautiful person. Like Mike Sadler in a lot of ways, he just lit a room up when he walked in. He established himself as a leader on our football team in his last year, and this is just tragic. It’s sort of rocked our Spartan football community.”

The Calgary Stampeders player was signed to the team in May, where he was a member of the practice squad. Although the rookie had yet to play a game this season, his loss was still felt in the locker room. Joshua Bell, defensive back for the Stampeders, told reporters that the loss was immediately felt in the locker room. “We lost family today,” Bell said. “Everybody doesn’t react the same, but we lost family today, we’re hurting. We’re shaken a little bit.”

Three suspects have been arrested in the wake of this tragedy. Prayers go out to members of Hicks’ family and his teammates.
