It apparently passed HBO’s test, and is now on its way from pilot to becoming a full series for the cable TV network.
HBO has ordered the half-hour comedy from Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin, based on a redeveloped/retooled script, executive produced by Lorne Michaels, along with Riddle and Salahuddin, who will both star as 2 young struggling entertainers, trying to make it big in Atlanta. Its title is "Brothers in Atlanta," although that could very well be a tentative title.
Maya Rudolph and Jaden Smith have both joined the project’s cast, in recurring roles, playing Moose’s boss, who happens to be a fading R&B diva, and a “New Atlanta” teenager, who is Langston’s rowdy neighbor with unpredictable interests and suspicious income, respectively.
Also Finesse Mitchell has been tapped for a recurring role, playing one of the backup singers to Rudolph’s fading R&B diva, and a nemesis to Moose (Salahuddin).
Tim Story is directing the pilot (and will direct more episodes) with a synopsis that reads: "After some time apart, 2 old college friends, Langston Rogers (Riddle) and Musa "Moose" Almuharib (Salahudin), reunite in the black mecca of the New South, Atlanta. Both determined to make it big, their unique perspectives on the quirks of both Atlanta and the black community inevitably lead to personal and professional conflicts."
No ETA yet, but HBO is likely eyeing the 2015/2016 TV season.
But I’m glad that it’s an HBO project. I hope it means that Riddle and Salahuddin will be free to push the envelope a bit, and give us something wholly original.
Worth noting, its HBO’s second pick up this season of an original series centered around the lives of black characters, created by black creatives – the other being Steve McQueen’s "Codes of Conduct."
