On Monday, we celebrate and honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His work changed the course of history and has inspired generations of leaders and change.

In honor of his legacy and in assessing how far we've come, Wallethub recently published a report that examines the differences between black and white Americans and the levels of racial progress states have made since.

The report measured the gaps between blacks and whites across 23 key indicators of equality and integration in each of the 50 states as well as the District of Columbia (the dataset ranges from median annual income to standardized-test scores to voter turnout). Here are some highlights:

Hawaii is the state making the most racial progress

Hawaii leads the charge in having made the most racial progress so far. Behind it are Delaware, New Mexico, Maryland and Texas. The five states that show the least racial progress are Vermont, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. D.C.

How states measure up against each other across issues

Let’s take a look at how states add up across the issue areas of income, unemployment, poverty and bachelor’s degrees. Here's how the states add up over time when it comes to income:

Unemployment:

The poverty gap:

Bachelor degrees:

Some states that are on the list have made great strides in racial progress areas like those mentioned above. The five states that rank highest when it comes to current levels of racial integration and progress are Wyoming, Texas, Georgia, New Mexico and Maryland. The five states with the least racial progress are Iowa, Minnesota, Vermont, South Dakota and Maine.

Even though they may not have made the top five in the issues we mentioned, many states are currently making progress in those same areas. Check it out:

And finally in the area of adults with at least a bachelors degree:

As we celebrate the life and work of Dr. King, take a moment to reflect on how far we have come and become intentional about taking the next steps to help us go further.
