Another rap icon has been laid to rest.
Christopher "Fresh Kid Ice" Wong Won, a founding member of the Miami-based hip-hop group, 2 Live Crew, passed away this week according to his agent, CNN reports.
Won was pronounced dead at a hospital in Miami. The cause of death has not been released to the media, however.
2 Live Crew was formed in the early 1980s. They were widely known mostly for their risque lyrics and sexual themes. Their 1989 album As Nasty As They Wanna Be was the group's largest money-maker.
That record also got the group into a lot of trouble.
The government dubbed the album as "legally obscene." The group was arrested after performing tracks from the album, and a store owner was arrested as well for selling the record to an undercover police officer.
The legal battle over that album almost went to the Supreme Court, but was ultimately settled in the US Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit in 1992.
The court ruled in favor of 2 Live Crew, swayed by arguments that the elements that authorities found objectionable actually stemmed from black history and literary traditions.
The win bolstered early rappers, and helped to provide legal protections for musicians throughout the 1990s.
2 Lives Crew other founding members include Mr. Mixx and Amazing Vee.
Entertainers, musicians, public figures and fans paid their respects to the late rapper through social media.
