Rapper Trae Tha Truth celebrated the tenth annual “Trae Day” in his hometown of Houston this past weekend. The event consisted of 3 celebratory days of festivities.
Trae Tha Truth began the weekend by distributing more than 600 free tickets to the local Children’s Museum on Friday, and threw a huge block party for the entire Houston community in Discovery Green, a large park downtown on Saturday.
Olympian gymnast Simone Biles, television personality Nick Cannon and even Drake showed up for the weekend festivities.
But the highlight of the weekend was inarguably when Trae Tha Truth awarded 75 scholarships to students from the community.
Trae Tha Truth told KTRK-TV that he was moved to give the scholarships because, “sometimes you gotta give people that push to make them want to do better.”
Trae also said that he hopes the move, and his partnership with the Houston Public Library, will get more people interested in reading.
"Our reading rates are really low," Trae said. And studies have backed this up. Three out of four black boys in California, for instance, don't meet state literacy standards.
And Trae's hometown is as appreciative of him as he is of it. The city of Houston, and the local Congress honored him during the festival for his efforts to promote education, literacy and the image of Houston.
Twitter users applauded Trae's work as well, and felt that the accolades he received this weekend were well-deserved:
