Several hundred members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated gathered at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History to say farewell to their sister Aretha Franklin.

The women traveled to Detroit to perform Franklin’s Omega Omega ceremony, a service performed for deceased Deltas before their funeral, according to The Associated Press. The sorority sisters were adorned in black outfits, strings of pearls and violet corsages, the organization’s official flower, as they honored Franklin with songs and speeches. An estimated 1,000 people attended the event.

“She loved Delta and its ideals … she looked for the best in others. Her life was an inspiration,” said member and politician Brenda Lawrence.

President and CEO Beverly E. Smith said the organization is “honored to have had her as part of our illustrious sisterhood.”

The “Rock Steady” singer was inducted into the sorority as an honorary member in 1992. The red outfit she wore as she laid in state has been interpreted as a nod to Delta Sigma Theta, according to Amsterdam News.
