Sixty-three-year-old Deborah Cantwell of Greentown, Indiana, was arrested on Thursday for misdemeanor charges of intimidation and criminal mischief. The charges came after Cantwell left a note on a neighbor's door demanding they move their biracial son out of the “all-white neighborhood."
Police reports state that at 1:13 a.m. on October 13, the child's father called to report that their home had been covered with toilet paper and an ominous note was found affixed to their door.
Amy Pundt, the mother of the child, shared a photo on her GoFundMe page of the letter written by Cantwell — a page started to raise money to “fight a hate crime."
“No N—ERS wanted in this neighborhood – THIS IS A WHITE NEIGHBORHOOD – some people find N—ERS Stressful due to 33 years of NEGATIVE experience and it causes serious health issues,” Cantwell’s note read. “YOUR N—ER KID IS NOT WELCOME.”
“YOU CAN SELL YOUR HOME AND MAKE MONEY ON IT RIGHT NOW,” the note continued. “BY THE WAY HOPE YOU HAVE DEEP POCKETS.”
According to the Kokomo Tribune, the father of the child informed law enforcement that he suspected it was his neighbor who committed the offense after learning that Cantwell expressed dissent regarding the family’s move to the home seller.
Text messages obtained during the investigation further expressed Cantwell’s frustrations.
“I am stressing now that we are going to get Black neighbors,” she text. “I am hoping that more people look at the house and an all-white family are the ultimate buyers. I am afraid the stress of Black neighbors could put me in the hospital,” she continued.
On October 18, Cantwell admitted to authorities that she was the person responsible for toilet-papering her neighbors’ home and composing the letter.
“I mean, Blacks get away with it every time.” She stated to an investigator. “Just rage — I was trying to vent.”
“I was just trying to let them know that they weren’t really … welcome as far as us. I just needed to let off some steam," she continued.
Caldwell will face an initial hearing regarding the chargers on November 19.
